Unit Fourteen is all about seasonality and freshness in coffee, we move with the harvests and our current coffee is from Colombia.
Juan Saldarriaga is a young coffee producer who took over his family farms a few years ago. We have had the pleasure of staying with him these past two years and have bought coffee from his farms for three. Claudinota is the name that Juan wanted to give his top lots from the 2019s harvest.
La Claudina is a short drive from the city of Bolivar in Antioquia. The farm house is at the bottom of the valley and the farms steep slopes are planted with Caturra, Castillo, Tabi, Variedad Colombia and even Geisha. During the height of the season Juan will employ 45 pickers and out of season the farm employees 3 permanent staff. What drew us to working with Juan is his hands on approach, he lives by the farm, works the land, processes the coffee and experiments. Juan’s two farms are quite large so we can grow with him and his coffees in the future as part of a more direct model.
Since last year there have been even more farm improvements and Juan has now built his own dry mill. We also have some of Juan’s others coffees too so watch out for these!
